4: The Dodger Hurler Who Fought for a Hotel Room

1 Comment

I’ve been connected to the Dodgers baseball team ever since I grew up living a couple of blocks from Ebbets Field where the Brooklyn Dodgers played their games. One of my freelance stories involved Don Newcombe, who was one of the best pitchers in team history. While Jackie Robinson made history by breaking the color line in major league baseball, Don was a leader in the fight to stay at the same hotels as the white players.

    Dear Mr. Kriegel;

    I liked this story the first time I saw it, and it is still relevant today. Successful hotel check-in is not a given for many distinguished travelers, even today, some seventy years after Newcombe’s adventure.
